The APDS-9960 is an optical module and ambient light sensor integrating ALS, infrared LED, and proximity detector for ambient light sensing (ALS). It uses dual photodiodes to approximate illuminance levels up to 0.01 lux, closely mimicking human visual response. It features programmable interrupt functionality with upper and lower thresholds, up to 16-bit resolution, and high flexibility even behind dark glass. The fully calibrated proximity sensor can detect objects up to 100 mm in diameter, eliminating the need for factory calibration of end devices and sub-components. The ambient light dynamic range has been increased from over 10K lux to 30K lux, and the sunlight calibration range has been significantly improved to 50K lux, greatly enhancing sensitivity and avoiding strong light interference. It can operate accurately with an air gap as small as 1.0 mm without external isolation, greatly simplifying customer structural designs. Its standby power consumption is 90μA typical, and sleep mode power consumption is 2.2μA typical, resulting in greater energy savings. A dedicated interrupt pin up to 400kHz (I2C fast mode) provides I2C interface compatibility. The fully integrated solution simplifies structural and circuit design, promising a better design experience and product value for users!
The built-in APDS-9960 sensor provides ambient light and color measurement, proximity detection, and non-contact gesture detection. With this RGB and gesture sensor, you can control a computer, microcontroller, or robot—far more powerful than a simple card swipe! In fact, the APDS-9960 gesture sensor was used in the Samsung Galaxy S5.

With four infrared sensors, you can measure the change in light reflectivity over time at each basic location and convert these changes into gestures. Our UI library can detect directional gestures (from left to right, from right to left, from top to bottom, from bottom to top), but theoretically more complex gestures, such as zigzags, clockwise or counterclockwise circles, and near-to-far gestures, can also be implemented.
